Although Raspberry was a pioneer, the competition caught up very quickly and the opportunities to compete with the Pi today are huge. You just have to look at what the electronics manufacturer Aaeon has just done with its new model, which performs far beyond what the others offer.

PICO-WHU4: maximum performance for a Pico-ITX board

We’ve seen options as compact as Intel’s own NUCs for many years. Powerful and very complete equipment in a space reduced almost to a minimum, with ridiculous consumption and with some models great advantages.

But while Intel itself developed systems like its sticks, it hasn’t stepped into the Raspberry-dominated world. It was the Aaeon company that will fight and want to revolutionize this market with their PICO-WHU4.

With dimensions of 100 x 72 mm, it is slightly larger than the Raspberry Pi 4 B, but not by much, and the fact is that size matters in this case if you want to accommodate everything that this model carries inside.

The Raspberry board, as we all know, contains one Cortex A-72 Quadcore a 1.5 GHz It has received rave reviews, but that has little to do with the choices Aaeon faces on its device.

As we can see, the options range from a Celeron Dual Core and no HT to an incredible Core i7-8665UE with four cores and eight threads at an incredible speed of up to 4.7 GHz, as if that wasn’t enough the iGPU won’t be disabled and there will be the UHD 610 or 620, so we’ll have enough power to both do certain calculations and run games, all with a nominal TDP of 15W.

Great RAM support and amazing connectivity

Perhaps the most surprising section is the RAM, as it supports up to 16 GB DDR4 at 2400 MHz SODIMM via LPDDR4-3200 in configurations of 1 GB, 2 GB and 4 GB, with the latter all welded, of course.

The connections are not neglected either, because we will initially have a SATA III, an mSATA or mPCIE x1, an M.2 2230, two COM and an RS-232/422/485.

It continues with two HDMI 1.4b, which offer 4K UHD 3840 x 2160 resolution, two Realtek RTL81111G Ethernet with Gigabit support, two USB 3.2 Gen2 ports and two internal USB 2.0 ports.

After all, this PICO-WHU4 is designed for fairly harsh conditions as it can withstand temperatures of up to 60 degrees and humidity ranges of up to 90%. However, if we want to improve temperatures, the brand offers a heatsink that is sold separately.

The only problem, as we can imagine, is the price, as it won’t be cheap given its advantages and of course it is in a different league than that of the Raspberry Pi. The price for the “mid-range” model with the i5- 8365UE is $ 783 which apparently needs to be added the price of the memory.

Hence, this is a board for users with higher market demands who need much higher performance than the original Raspberry Pi alternative.
